Women's Wrestling begins the season at the Menlo Open in California
The OUAZ Women's Wrestling Team traveled to Menlo College in Atherton, California to get their season started. They opened the season with a Dual Meet with host Menlo College on Friday night.
OUAZ opened the meet with two pins by
Liliana Voakes and
Dannielle Sizelove. Menlo came back with two pins of their own over Ethne Bogg and
Angelina Walker to tie the match at 12-12. Next up was
Bella Ramos for OUAZ. In a close match, Ramos lost at decision to Lastevia Muir 11-8, putting Menlo up 15-12.
Brianna Reyes won by pin to retake the lead 18-15. With
Maya Duncan out due to injury,
Abigail Lubic, normally at 145lbs step up to take on Leia Hernandez at 160lbs. Hernandez was able to get the pin, followed by a Menlo pin over
Julia Cox. Menlo now had a 27-18 lead.
The teams traded pins with
Quetzali Zacarias winning by pin and
Janelle Mattos losing the final match. The final score was Menlo winning 33-24.
"It was a very tough match, especially a couple of our wrestlers not able to wrestle due to injury", said Head Coach
Ed Cruz. "Obviously, Menlo was the better team tonight," Cruz continued that he feels the team is making great strides in practice and will continue to improve.
On Sunday, the team wrestled in the always tough, Menlo Open Tournament. The tournament is attended by several NCAA and NAIA teams with wrestlers that are highly ranked Nationally.

Ed Cruz said "We look always look forward to matching up against the toughest teams out there." We looked good overall and are excited to see how the season progresses. The team was led by
Liliana Voakes' 4
th place finish at 103lbs.
Other wrestlers who looked strong and got some key victories were Danielle Sizelove,
Bella Ramos,
Brianna Reyes,
Quetzali Zacarias, and
Evelynn Coronado.
Next on the schedule is the Embry-Riddle Women's Open on Nov 14
th.
